Food for thought

Is there a correlation between athletic pursuits and academic success? Interesting little analysis by USSA Team Academy Head of School Jory Macomber on current US Ski Team members who are taking college courses while training/racing.

It's all about finding that balance!

A Classic Winter Term Day!

Yesterday turned into a truly classic Winter Term day. Here's how it unfolded:

We woke up to our third day of stellar on-hill conditions:

Early morning view of the Great Range
Classic ADK cold weather temperature inversion! -15F at the base, +15 up top.
The athletes trained all day, had a great 3-hour study hall with tutors, and then jumped right into their strength program with Coaches Ambrose and Kurt at the OTC.

Boys rocking the warmup lunges
The girls getting some serious amplitude
Hanna demonstrating some great RDL form
Med ball hucks!
The freeride contingent looking good!

Blake getting 'em done!
In the evening, Northwood Ski Team and Winter Term athletes were treated to a fantastic lecture from Canadian ex-World Cup racer JP Roy, who has been mixing it up on the circuit with the likes of Bode, Rahlves, Hirscher, Guay and Kostelić for the past decade. He shared his life story from growing up in rural Quebec and building jumps in his backyard to cranking into the top-10 on the World Cup circuit after starting "from the back" in 59th and 66th.

Guest speaker and former Canadian National Team Member JP Roy

Commitment.
JP's message was fantastic-- he's a true student of the sport, constantly seeking new ways to adapt and prepare for the demands of high level ski racing. But JP stressed that he never dreamed that representing Canada at two Olympic Games or at World Championships was in his mind as a U14 skier. He simply wanted to improve each season, push himself by training with older skiers, and become a better athlete.

JP made it clear that even as a national team member, he spent as much time building jumps and "sending it" as he did running gates. Passion for skiing is key, and results will follow.

The audience
All in all, a great day in the life of a Winter Term athlete.

THANK YOU to Coach Roy for taking the time to speak to our group, we're inspired and eager to improve!

Mid-January photo blizzard!

U16 Winter Termer Blake Piper has been hounding us for a fresh slice of blog, and hey-- we had a whole pile of fun photos lying around so we'll post 'em here.

Winter Term athletes have been busy on the road at races and competitions, and the season is off to a really great start. Here's a sampling of some of our recent adventures:

First things first. We start our mornings off right at Winter Term!
With smoothies!
First we hit the books...
Then it's off to the 'Face
Via the van. Which is fun when it's -26 degrees F.
But at least it's sunny... and the grooming is awesome!

Did we mention we have awesome coaches?
And generally midweek there aren't a whole lot of lift lines...
Which is good, 'cause we're doing a whole lotta this!
Right?!
#SpeedFactory
Those Gore kids though!
#U16s4life (Smitty came up with that hashtag, btw)
Speedy & Nezzitronic!
Andrea is new to Winter Term! Let's just say that she's adjusted pretty darn quick
Always a good sign when the coaches are pleased
Piper!
#WarhorseTraining. The WT crew is always learning!
That's it for now. More to come. Soon!
